May 1, 1930 – November 4, 2012

Gordon passed away unexpectedly at the age of 82. He will be sadly missed by his wife Pat, his sons and their families: Mark (Sylvia), Carlyn (Ben), Blair and Kelsey; Brock (Leona); Ross (Dolores), Leanne (Matt), Tanis (Andrew) and Denise; Guy (Kathy), Melissa and Laura; and Kent (Carole) Elise, Stefan, Justin and Claire; and his daughter and her family, Jan Filippelli (Tony) Danielle, Elliott, Melia, Shane, Seyarra. He will also be missed by his two great-granddaughters Ella and Emily and his close sister-in-law, Jolyne and niece, Susan.

Gordon graduated from King Edward High School in 1948. In 1955 Gordon started his career in accounting in Vancouver with Rudd and Goold and in two short years was promoted to partner. Gordon and Pat moved their family to Kamloops in 1958 and the firm became Rudd, Goold and Elliott.

Gordon continued to build the practice, returning to Vancouver 14 years later as the managing partner of a much larger accounting firm, then known as Jarrett, Goold, and Elliott. In 1981 this firm merged with Price Waterhouse and shortly thereafter, Gordon and Pat were asked to relocate to Toronto, with Gordon assuming the role of managing partner of the firm’s national office. He served in this capacity until his retirement from public practice in 1992, after which he and Pat returned to the west coast and settled on Bowen Island.

Gordon volunteered extensively in his CA profession and was elected to the ICABC Council, ultimately serving a 1973-1974 term as the Institute president. Gordon became an FCA in 1974 and was honoured with a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Institute of Chartered Accountants in 2008. Gordon was also a founding shareholder of Campion Marine Inc. and a Chairman of the Board.

His community involvement included being a member of the Salvation Army BC Advisory Board. He was past President of the National Miniature Donkey Association of North America. He played a key role in the Ontario Royal Agricultural Winter Fair and was a proud supporter of children in 4H Clubs. On Bowen Island, Gordon served on the Board of Directors of the Volunteer Fire Department.

In lieu of flowers, donations to the Salvation Army, Canuck Place, Looking Glass Foundation would be gratefully appreciated. We will greatly miss his love and passion for life, his ambition for excellence and his daily list of things that must get done. He loved having his family around him and lived his life with many passions, he will always be remembered for family, business, agriculture and boating.

A memorial service to celebrate his life will be held Friday, November 9 at 2:00pm at Seymour Golf & Country Club, 3723 Mount Seymour Parkway, North Vancouver.

Campion Runs World’s Most Powerful Electric Outboard

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

October 25, 2012 – Kelowna, BC

Campion Marine, Canada’s largest fiberglass boat builder, has launched their new Chase 550 bow rider powered by the world’s first 180 horsepower electric outboard engine designed by ReGen Nautic USA Inc.

At 45 kilos, the engine weighs about a quarter of the traditional gas-powered outboard. The engine is extremely quiet. At top speed, the loudest noise is the sound of waves splashing on the boat. The first boat Campion built using this new technology will be going to Pro Nautic, a Campion dealer in Switzerland.

“It takes a little getting used to”, states Brock Elliott, Campion Marine’s President, “you instinctively reach for the key to turn it on and realize it already is on and that you just simply need to push the throttle. With the huge amount of torque that electric motors provide, the boat just gets up and goes.”

“The opportunity to launch the world’s first 180 horsepower electric outboard engine, which has been named E-Fusion, has been a great next step for Campion’s quest to build the best and the greenest”, continues Elliott.

Campion’s commitment continues to lead the industry in building the greenest boats by using the best and most ecologically friendly products. Campion builds all of its boats with Nexeo’s (formerly Ashland) Envirez® resin, Maxguard LE gel coats, Ecomate® flotation foams, soy based upholstery foam and Acrastrip®, an acetone replacement. Campion has made bold steps forward to create a more environmentally friendly boat.

Campion Marine, a family owned business, nears its 40th year of production, building Chase high performance boats, Explorer sport utility boats, Allante runabouts and cruisers, Svfara wake and surf tow boats, Infinyte alternate energy boats and the soon to be released Biltmore “Fibertoon” pontoon line.

NMMA Canada Honours Ross Campion Jardine, Founding Member of Campion Marine, with Hall of Fame Award

Toronto, ON – January 16th 2012 – The National Marine Manufacturers Association (NMMA) inducted Ross Campion Jardine, former General Manager and founding shareholder of Campion Marine, into the NMMA Hall of Fame. Ross’ career-long achievements were recognized at the NMMA Annual General Meeting during the Toronto International Boat Show at the Direct Energy Centre.

The NMMA Hall of Fame is the Association’s highest honour. It was established in 1988 and recognizes individuals who have, or continue to generate, substantial and lasting contributions toward the advancement of the marine industry. It honours individuals whose names and deeds are synonymous with the pursuit of quality, innovation, and perfection within their respective spheres of expertise.

“Ross Campion Jardine has dedicated his career to helping grow recreational boating while creating a thriving business in Canada and internationally,” said Rick Layzell, NMMA Chairman. “Ross’ dedication to our industry and his leadership over the years has had a significant positive impact on the recreational marine industry and I am honoured to be announcing his induction to the NMMA Hall of Fame.”

As General Manager of Campion Marine, Ross was instrumental in charting the course for Campion to grow internationally and to eventually become Canada’s largest independently owned fiberglass power boat builder. Ross, along with his son, Rex Jardine, introduced numerous boat lines and models to the world of power boating. The Chase line of Campion high performance boats was essential to the introduction of the APEX Hull – now used on almost every Campion model. The APEX Hull is an award winning design that offers safer boat handling, exceptional performance and better fuel economy.

Ross’ son Rex Jardine, accepted the award on behalf of his father.

NMMA congratulates Ross and his family on this outstanding achievement.

A few years ago, Campion was approached by its resin coating supplier to ask if it would be interested in proving a bio resin product on an experimental boat. Ashland Chemical had developed a corn, soybean and petroleum resin, called Envirez, which they wanted to test on a vessel in real conditions. Campion was keen, and built not one, but two of their craft to prove the product – the very fast 18’ Chase 550 model with a Volvo 320hp V8 motor, and a Chase 600 model, slightly longer at 20’. After rigorously testing both vessels on British Columbia’s Lake Okanagan, they were thrilled to report no signs of gel coat cracking, or any other signs of wear.

Then, another unexpected thing happened. Mark Hayhoe, of K2 Milling in Barrie, Ontario, asked Campion to build him the world’s first bio resin, bio diesel boat. Again, Campion was up to the challenge, and for the past two years, K2 Milling’s Campion 654i bio resin boat, with a bio diesel-fueled Volvo engine, has been running flawlessly on Ontario’s Lake Muskoka.

This was Campion’s business epiphany – its AHA moment: let’s be the company that builds the world’s greenest power boat. Now, with every step in the manufacturing process, the company asks itself: could we be carrying out this step, or building this piece greener?

From bio resin and bio fuelled-engines, they have reduced the amount of water used in the way they clean their moulds.

They now use top-of-the-line low emission gel coats on all their boats.

The quality glass matting installed in the hull and deck of their vessels uses less resin – meaning fewer emissions.

The flotation foam they now use in their boats is environmentally safe Ecomate, which also requires only half the material of conventional, toxic foam to achieve the same density.

The stringers and flooring on their Allante 485 and 505 models is made from recycled plastic bottles.

Upholstery is now made with soya foams. What’s next for this power-thinking power boat builder?

Congratulations, Campion, our Green Marine Champion for 2011!
